Introduction to EndNote
Remote Databases
To connect to a database using a connection provided by EndNote
- Go to Tools > Connect > Connect...
- Select a connection from the list and click Connect
- This will bring up the search tool used for searching local references
- Next you will see a dialog box detailing the number of references found, and asking how many you would like to retrieve, enter a range and click OK
- A new window will pop up and it will populate with the references, select the references you would like to keep on your computer and click the Copy X References To button and select the library you would like to add the references to
Using UW Libraries
The University of Washington has instructions for importing references into EndNote at http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/endnote/
- As you search through the Library's online catalog, mark the references you wish to import by checking the box to the left of the reference you want to save and click on Save Marked Records
- After you have selected all the references you wish to import click on View Saved Records
- Select End-Note format from the list on the left and send to Local Disk
- Click Submit.
- Open EndNote
- Go to File > Import...
- Click Choose File..., select the file you downloaded (by default the file will be called export.txt), and then click Open
- Make sure the Import Option is set to EndNote Import
- Click Import
OTHER DATABASES
Because each library and database is slightly different it would be impossible to describe the process for each one. However, most online databases and reference libraries follow a process similar to those listed below. You can visit http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/endnote/ for more general instructions.
Web of Science (OVID example)
- Mark the references you wish to save
- Click EXPORT TO REFERENCE SOFTWARE
Note: In Internet Explorer this will automatically launch EndNote, simply select the library you want to import to. In Firefox open with EndNote and proceed as with Internet Explorer.You will need to click References > Show All References to view the rest of your library.
Aerospace and High Technology Database (CSA example)- Mark the references you wish to save
- Click on Save, Print, Email
- Select Full Format and click Save
- In EndNote go to File > Import
- Choose the file (it is called csaresults.txt by default)
- Under Import Option select Other Filters. Under Find select Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, select Aerospace High Tech (CSA) click Choose
- Click Import
Note: You will need to click References > Show All References to view the rest of your library.
