Introduction to EndNote
EndNote 8 and Microsoft Word
EndNote has the ability to interface with MS Word to help you format and organize documents and articles you are writing that require reference information.
Manuscript Wizard
If you are writing an article for publication to a specific journal you can use this tool to ensure that you are using the correct format for that journal
- In EndNote go to Tools > Manuscript Templates
- Select the template you wish to use. EndNote will automatically start MS Word. (If a security warning pops up, check the box next to "Always trust macros from this publisher" and then click "Enable Macros")
- Follow the document wizard in MS Word

Adding Citations
To add a citation from your library to a document:
- Place your cursor where you want the citation
- Go to Tools > EndNote 8 > Find Citations
- A dialog box listing references to the Library currently open in EndNote will appear. Select the desired reference from the list.
Formatting a Bibliography
- Go to Tools > EndNote 8 > Format Bibliography
- Select the desired format from the drop down menu labeled With Output Style
Note: If you choose not to use a manuscript template, citations and bibliography formatting will work exactly the same.
