Review, Download, and Return Portfolios
With Portfolio Project Builder, your participants (students) can submit completed project pages for you to review and comment on. Participants can even make changes based on your comments, and then submit their portfolios again for additional comments. Your assistants can also review, comment, and return submitted participant portfolios; Portfolio distinguishes your comments from assistant comments.
Note: The Portfolio Project Builder is not designed to be an assignment submission tool, and does not enforce deadlines. If you are interested in online assignment submission, see the Catalyst Collect It tool.
Reviewing submitted portfolios.
Portfolio Project Builder will notify you when your participants have submitted portfolios in three different areas. In the recent activity box on the home page and on the My Projects page, a link indicating the number of submitted portfolios will appear. Simply click the link to begin reviewing portfolios. On the Project Summary page, a yellow alert message will remind you to View participant portfolios when they have been submitted. To review submitted participant portfolios, follow the steps below:
- From the home page or the My Projects page, click the submitted portfolios link next to the project title. Or, from the Project Summary page, click View participant portfolios on the "I want to" menu. These options will only be available if you have submitted portfolios. You will move to a new page titled "View portfolios" page.
- Select the portfolios you wish to review. Select the Review option from the menu at the bottom of the screen, then click Next. You will be taken to the "Review portfolios" page (see illustration at the right).
- To make comments on the participant's work, use the text box below their work labeled "Insert your comments here." Be sure to click Save to save the comments you have added to each page.
- To review a different page of the same participant portfolio, select the desired page title from the "Page" drop-down menu at the top right of the page. Pages submitted for review are indicated by black text in the drop-down menu. Pages not yet submitted for review will be grayed-out in the drop-down menu.
- To review another participant's portfolio, select the participant's name from the "Participant" drop-down menu at the top left of the page.
- When you are done reviewing portfolios, click Finished to save your work and return to the "View portfolios" screen. From here you can download (or save) a copy of participant portfolios, or return portfolios to participants.
Downloading a participant portfolio
Downloading a participant's portfolio saves a copy of their work on your desktop in a compressed file. Use this option if you would like to save a participant's submission to look at later, or keep a copy before they do additional work or make changes based on your comments. You can also keep a copy of the participant's portfolio even if they delete their version from their Portfolio workspace.
To download a participant portfolio:
- From the home page or the My Projects page, click the submitted portfolios link, next to the project title. Or, from the Project Summary page, click View participant portfolios on the "I want to" menu. These options will only be available if you have submitted portfolios. You will move to a new page titled "View portfolios".
- Select the portfolios you wish to download.
- Select the Download option from the menu at the bottom of the page, and then click Next. You will move to the "Download participant portfolios" page.
- Click Download now and the portfolio(s) will be downloaded to your desktop as a Zip archive..
- To open the resulting zip file, you must have archiving and extraction software such as WinZip installed on your computer.
Returning portfolios to participants.
Once you're done commenting on a participant portfolio, you should save your comments and return it to your participant. The number of portfolio submissions and its subsequent returns is unlimited. Keep in mind, however, that these functions only work as long as you have neither discontinued distribution of your project nor deleted your Portfolio project.
To return portfolio(s) to a participant:
- From the home page or the My Projects page, click the submitted portfolios link next to the project title. Or, from the Project Summary page, click View participant portfolios on the "I want to" menu. These options will only be available if you have submitted portfolios. You will move to a new page titled "View portfolios".
- Select the boxes next to the portfolios you wish to return.
- Select the Return option from the menu at the bottom of the page, and click Next. The participant portfolios you selected will be returned to their authors.
