Create Global Navigation
You can use the global navigation template to create a set of links that you want to use on many Web pages. For example, if you were creating a course Web site, you could create links to the course home page, the syllabus page, the course schedule, the assignments page, and lecture notes, and use these links on each page of your course Web site.
The global navigation feature is only available with the enhanced three-column layout or enhanced inset layout template sets. It is not available with the classic course template set.
Follow the steps below to create global navigation:
- On the top menu bar of the SimpleSite workspace, click New Page. You will move to the "Create a new page" page.
- Select Global Navigation from the "New page or page element" drop-down menu (You might need to scroll down to the bottom of the menu to see the global page element options).
- Select the location on your Web site where you want to save the new page. Click the folder in the file tree in the left frame, and the folder name will automatically appear in the "Location" field. If you do not see the folder you want, click the expand icons in the file tree to navigate through your folders.
- Enter a file name for the global content element in the "Unique file name" field. A name will be suggested based on the template that you have chosen, but you can enter a different name if you choose. If you change the suggested file name, be sure to include the appropriate file extension, such as .shtml, .doc, or .jpg. Including the file extension at the end of the file name helps you, others, and your Web browser or other software know what kind of file this is, and how to correctly display or open the file. Files made with the SimpleSite enhanced templates need to have .shtml as the file extension. The name of your Web page cannot contain spaces or special characters. You can use a hyphen or an underscore in the filename.
- Click Next. You will be taken to the global navigation template and can begin creating links. You can also view detailed instructions for creating links with the link toolbar.
Once you have created global navigation, you can add the global navigation element to your Web pages.
